The Pastoral Appointment Process
You may be
wondering how the process works regarding the appointment of
pastors in the United Methodist Church.Thepastoral appointment process begins each year in January when the
Staff Parish Relations Committee (SPRC) at each church in the
Florida Conference, submits to their District Superintendent (DS)
a written report called the Church Profile. This report outlines
the qualities and functions of pastoral ministry needed to fulfill
the mission and goals for the congregation.Pastoral appointments for each of the 750+ United Methodist
churches in the Florida Conference are reviewed on an annual basis
by the Bishop and his cabinet, in consultation with the DS and the
SPRC.The primary
objective in making an appointment is to match the missional needs
of a congregation with the gifts and skills of the pastors and
secondly to establish long-term pastorates wherever possible and
appropriate.When
this process is completed, pastors are “sent” by the Bishop to
the church they will serve, rather than being “called” by the
congregation to serve.
